Kurt Pakan an American Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Artist
Kurt was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, grew up outside of Akron, Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Kent State University majoring in illustration and graphic design. As a junior in high school he was selected for a life drawing series of classes by one of Kent State’s top figure artists, Thompson Lehnert.
As a senior in high school, Kurt was voted Akron Society of Artists, Artist of the Year for his age group and awarded a scholarship. He attended Kent on a football scholarship and was a 4-year letter man and captain. While at Kent he participated in a 3 man show of his work as well as group showings with his class. He finished his senior thesis and graduated in 1983.
While working full time at some of the most prestigious design firms and ad agencies around Rochester, Kurt found time to have several pieces included in the Rochester Finger Lakes Annual Exhibition, a two person show at the Pyramid Gallery, and Members Show at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Kurt’s commercial work was chosen to be published in Graphis Design International, Print’s Regional Design Annual, Graphic Design USA, as well as, garnering medals in local competition including best of show. His package design work earned him a best of show in International Brands package design competition and is published in their awards book.
Kurt has been a graphic designer and brand/design consultant for the past 10 years running Kurt Pakan Design Inc. This past summer he gathered all his posters, illustration, drawings and paintings and created Kurt Pakan Studio with the help of his mother (a University of Rochester doctoral graduate), Patricia Pakan. Kurt is writing a blog based on his work and life as a graphic designer and artist. He also teaches as an adjunct design professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. He is married to Debora Pakan and has a daughter Jessica, a son Andrew, and a boxer named Junior.
